3 injuries to look out for after a car accident

On Behalf of | Nov 25, 2020 | Firm News

Even a minor fender-bender carries the potential for leaving victims with serious injuries. Certain types of injuries are particularly problematic because they may not become apparent until days or even weeks following the accident. It’s important to seek medical attention anytime you’re involved in an accident, even if you feel fine. Doing so could very well save your life. With that in mind, here are three types of injuries you should be especially mindful of if you were involved in a motor vehicle accident.

1. Shoulder injuries

Untold lives have been saved since seatbelts became standard equipment in automobiles. While surviving an accident is preferable to the alternative, seatbelts themselves can cause serious injuries. A sudden jolt to your vehicle can cause you to make a twisting motion against your seatbelt. This motion could cause you to tear your shoulder ligaments. This type of injury usually requires surgery.

2. Back and neck injuries

A violent impact will not do your back or neck any favors. You may not experience much, if any, pain right after the accident. However, a strained muscle will definitely make its presence known at some point. Early treatment can help you avoid serious discomfort.

You should also be aware of the risks of a herniated disc. The impact of the accident could cause the tissue between your vertebrae to come loose or possibly rupture. Left untreated, this type of injury could lead to paralysis. Never ignore back pain if you’ve been in a car accident.

3. Traumatic brain injuries

Few things are more serious than a traumatic brain injury (TBI). These injuries are especially dangerous because oftentimes, people are unaware that they have even suffered such an injury. If a person fails to get medical help, a TBI could lead to death. Anytime an accident results in trauma to the head or causes a violent shaking motion, you should get medical help right away.

Adrenaline can mask symptoms

Your body releases adrenaline in response to the shock of an accident. This can cause your body to ignore any pain you may otherwise be feeling. You should always exercise caution and get seen by a medical professional as soon as possible after an accident.
